How long does dog sedation last?

After coming home from any procedure requiring an anaesthetic or sedation, your pet should be kept in a warm, dry, quiet and ideally indoor location in the 24 hours following discharge from our clinic. Your pet may still be a little bit drowsy after he/she goes home with you.

How Do Dogs Act after sedation?
Your pet may also feel groggy and tired even hours after the operation is performed. Do not worry, being sleepy is normal. Sometimes, an animal will seem fully alert after surgery, and then suddenly tired. Delayed reactions are common.
How long should a dog sleep after sedation?
With today’s anesthetics, many of which are reversible, your dog should be almost completely normal by the time of discharge. Many dogs are sleepy or tired for twelve to twenty-four hours after anesthesia.
How long does it take for a dog sedative to kick in?
Onset of action is approximately one hour and the dose range can be large for this medication (Table 1), but for the purposes of pre-hospital sedation, it is recommended to start at 5 mg/kg.
How long does mild sedation last in dogs?
You may also notice your dog shaking after surgery—this can be a common side effect of sedation, and should go away within 48 hours. If the effects of sedation continue to linger after 48 hours, or if you have any concerns about your dog’s recovery, don’t hesitate to contact your vet.
Why is my dog whining after sedation?
The whining is due to the anesthetic drugs given for surgery, these drugs can cause your dog/cat to be confused and disoriented (dysphoric). We expect this behavior (as frustrating as it can be) for the next 12 to 24 hours as the anesthetic drugs wear off.
